Non-violence key to world peace: Shivraj Patil

KURUKSHETRA, Jun 18: Ego and greed are the causes of conflicts and competition which need to be contained with the practice of spiritual values like truth, love, cooperation and compassion which are common in all religious scriptures and are the basis of creating a culture of peace, non violence, justice & equality in society, said  Punjab Governor Shivraj Patil.  Patil was addressing the spiritual leaders and scholars at the inaugural function of the two-days national convention on “Ahimsa Parmo Dharam and Shrimad Bhagvad Gita” organized by  Prajapita Brahma Kumaris Ishwariya Vishwa Vidyalaya at Kurukhestra University Auditorium here  on June 16.

Speaking on the topic “God’s Wisdom for Re-establishing Violence Free Society”, the Governor said that Shrimad Bhagavad Gita gives the message of non violence the practice of which is essential to restore individual and world peace.

He further said that the growing violence in society is due to inner vices which can be contained through the practice of spirituality and non violence which are the essence of Shrimad Bhagavat Gita and which are being carried out by the Brahma Kumaris all over India and Abroad.

Landslides

Even as 'killer' floods drown much of North India and Bangladesh an expert report released by BBC on Monday blames 'human activities' for extreme rainfall patterns, seismicity and increasing number of landslides across South Asia. Authorities in Bangladesh which is savaged by floods every year, confirm that the number of people killed and displaced and properties destroyed is rising alarmingly.

Though landslides are a common enough part of monsoon life in the Hindu-Kush-Himalaya (HKH) region, what is worrying most experts is their increasing frequency and ferocity. "There has been an increase in the events of landslides in the region in recent years," says Mriganka Ghattak, a specialist in geological disasters with the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC's) Disaster Management Centre in Delhi.

Of the total number of landslides in 2009 across the globe, 60% were in South Asia accounting for 280 lives. The region's share in the subsequent years has remained just as grim. Last month around 110 people drowned to death in the Chittagong region of Bangladesh in a deluge caused by landslides. A few days earlier, more than 80 people died in an earthquake-triggered landslide in northern Afghanistan.

Although authorities in most South Asian countries agree that there has been an alarming rise in the cases of landslide in the HKH region in recent years, they are yet to release official figures.

Another scandal in making?

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to focus on some of the problems of the customers of the private company i.e Jeevan Samriddhi which is located in Naharlagun. After Kolkata Sharda Group Chit Fund Scandal, the customers of Jeevan Samriddhi got worried and asked the company to return their principal amount without interest but utter to our surprise, the aforesaid company is refusing to pay back our principal amount by citing the reason of non maturity of plan.  If Private Company like Rose Valley can return back the principal amount to their feared customers than why Jeevan Samriddhi is denying the principal amount of the customers. Even banks and insurance company like SBI, UCO,AXIS, Vijaya etc. banks and LIC, Bajaj Allianz etc can pay back before maturity why not they? Are they waiting for us to knock the door of consumer court? Are they waiting for us to lodge an FIR in police?

Now question is that, where they have invested our money? We are not asking for interest, why they are unable to payback our principal amount. All these things make us to doubt integrity of the company.

It is our sincere request to the state govt. to intervene in this matter seriously, otherwise the hard earned money of the people of Arunachal Pradesh is in danger again after Jeevan Suraksha scandal.

Yours,

K. Robin

Do something worthwhile for the welfare of students

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed and reputed daily, I am writing this in regard to vandalism of NRL petroleum station by suspected AAPSU activists.

Gone are the days of AAPSU when they would fight for the genuine right of Arunachal Students. Nowadays, it is all about money, politics and corruption.

Damaging a petrol station because the owner refused to give them petrol shows barbarism of our union leader. Only a third class union can show these types of acts.

And moving on to the statement issued by AAPSU that Mr Pertin is supporting Bhutanese refugee, I want to ask our beloved AAPSU leader where were they all this time.

When govt. said they would issue PRC to NON APST, why they were silent? may be their pockets were filled by politicians.

My request to the AAPSU, as you represents all students; please do something worthwhile for the welfare of students instead of commuting such shameless acts.

Bring back the old glory reputation of AAPSU.

Yours,

Kenton Riba

Selective target of Arunachalee vehicle

Dear Editor,

This is about an experience while traveling in Assam road, which has left me feeling cheated & exploited by Assam police just because my car registration number bears letters "AR".  On 15th June 2013 I was traveling towards Itanagar from Bhalukpong. In between Ghopur (Assam) and Banderdewa I was stopped by some police constables, they demanded to see my car's registration card & driving license, which I obediently showed. Everything about documents was ok but they pointed towards police station and asked me to talk there. I was confused but I went in, name of police station is "Hawajan Police Outpost". A constable in khaki (his name plate reads Bhuyan) asks for my documents again, I obliged again, he kept documents in his custody & demanded insurance paper of car, I produced again. Then he said insurance premium for current year has not been paid yet and asked to pay Rs 1000/- as fine. I requested him that I was not aware that being late in paying premium of car insurance is a traffic violation. Usually people stop continuing car insurance policy after 2nd or 3rd year so I requested him to ignore this. All my requests went in deaf ear. He just kept replying "apuni ek hazar tuka tu dibo hi lagibo". I said ok but I will pay with full receipt, mr Bhuyan replied no problem & took out a booklet of plane paper with just one ink seal on corner of page. I demanded that I want proper challan receipt of the fine and nothing less, and then he asked me to speak to i/c sitting inside station. I went to him; his name plate reads B.Bora, decorated 2 stars on shoulder. I narrated all my story again, he showed me an age old torn book page which is kept ready opened where under some section it was mentioned that driving an uninsured car could invite fine upto Rs. 1000/-. There were many sub clauses which I couldn’t read due to lack of time. I requested him that fine upto Rs 1000 means any amount of Rs. 1000 or lesser and it does not mean that I have to pay exactly Rs. 1000/ - I also complained about the kind of receipt, he then asked me to pay Rs. 500/- and leave. Our argument carried on for some time, then I realized about my children and wife waiting for me under scorching sun of afternoon. Finally, Mr. Bora settled for Rs 300/- after paying the amount I came out to meet constable Bhuyan and demanded back my document. He was totally reluctant to give it back and twice reminded to S.I Bora that I am an Arunachalee by repeatedly saying "hetu arunachal hor gari tu ki korim". He gave my documents back only when the S.I waved 3 notes of Rs. 100/- each from his window (perhaps showing as symbolic victory of extortion).

What makes me angry is the way they single out vehicles of Arunachal for applying traffic rule and extortion of money for their individual pocket. On that particular day also so many vehicles of Assam were openly violating traffic rules in front of the said police station, bikers were plying with 3 persons without helmet, passenger vehicles like Tata Winger were carrying 15 -20 persons more than its capacity with few sitting on roof & others dangling on windows and door. When I compared the same to constable Bhuyan his answer was, "apuni nijer kota kobi na, lukor kota tu kele koi asey". This clearly implies that they were no way bothered about traffic rules; they just wanted to make some money by targeting Arunchalee vehicles. I am worried now about this menace of bullying and extortion as I have to again go back by same route. I am also sure that many such incidents have happened to our fellow Arunachalee travelers and will continue to happen if no steps taken. This may also result in retaliation in some other form resulting in ugly situation.

Therefore I sincerely request S.P of Sonitpur District to kindly inculcate some manner and wisdom to his subordinates. I am ready to pay my fine but legally and in prescribed challan.

I also request our state govt. not to give a deaf ear to this constant cry of foul by citizens of Arunachal and talking to Assam counterpart might solve the problem.

Yours,

Ramesh Jamo
